Family mediation is a way of resolving disputes without resorting to court. In mediation, parties are helped to reach their own solutions. Anyone can use mediation if they are experiencing a family dispute, whether it concerns children or finances and irrespective of their relationship - whether they are married, in a civil partnership, living together, separated a long time ago or have never lived together.
The parties explain their concerns and needs to each other in the presence of an impartial mediator who helps them explore possible options and create proposals acceptable to them both. In between mediation sessions, their own solicitors can continue to give legal advice, if necessary.
Mediation can work to everyone's benefit at any stage - even when court proceedings have started.
Whatever the issues, it should only take a few sessions with one of our experienced mediators. When a jointly acceptable proposal is reached, it is recorded by the mediator in a written document which can be formalised by a solicitor, if desired.
Remember, you can always speak to one of our experienced mediators (on your own and for free) to find out about mediation and to see whether it's suitable for you and your family.
Legal aid may be available for mediation, and if you qualify the whole process can be free.
