Children can be damaged by domestic violence both directly (e.g. they are being attacked or threatened) or indirectly (they see attacks or threats directed at you or someone else close to them). The effects can last a lifetime, but it is possible to protect children from domestic violence.
You may be particularly worried about letting your child spend time with an abusive parent. In serious cases, the family courts can investigate the level of risk to you and your child before making a decision about this.
Domestic violence alone does not prevent there being contact, but the family court will have to be satisfied that any risks to the child are managed and contained, and that the other parent can cope with contact going ahead. In very serious cases, there may be referrals made for specialist assessment and treatment, such as for anger management.
Sometimes, contact centres can provide a safe place where parents can see their children, and we can discuss this option with you.
If you are a male victim of domestic violence and need confidential advice, you can contact Devon M.A.L.E. (Men's Advice Line and Enquiries) on 0845 064 6800
