You will need to be assessed to check that you are able to care for a child. Social services will usually do this assessment. Once you have been assessed and approved as a possible adopter, you have to be “matched” with a particular child. This means that the adoption agency (again, often social services) responsible for placing a child for adoption will assess whether you and the child would be a good match, in terms of your backgrounds, family makeup, ethnicity, etc.
Once all that is done, you can apply to the family courts for an adoption order, and that is when you need specialist family lawyers – we are here to help every step of the way.
